The sports world is in a state of purgatory after the Coronavirus caused all major sports leagues to pause in early March. However, now in early April there is news regarding the leagues and teams cropping up from time to time.
Here are a few headlines around the New Jersey and New York teams to keep you up to date during this time.
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are pretty far out of playoff contention, but the NHL is reportedly discussing new playoff formats to determine a Stanley Cup champion.
Devils defenseman P.K. Subban said he would “love to see” a playoff format in which all 31 teams are given a chance. It’s not exactly likely to happen, but if the NHL only has limited time for the playoffs without finishing the regular season, a tournament between more than just 16 teams could happen.
New York Rangers
The Rangers are also likely hoping for some sort of tournament to get into the playoffs. They are two points out of a Wild Card spot,but have the 16th most points in the league.
New York Giants
The New York Giants are running business as usual through March and April. Well, as usual as they can. Everyone is working remotely and from home, but NFL Free Agency is still in full swing, as is the leadup to the NFL Draft.
The Giants were rumored to be shopping tight end Evan Engram, but he is still on the team and they reportedly did not consider dumping him.
In free agency the Giants made a bevy of moves. Their signings were headlined by signing veteran offensive tackle Cameron Fleming to a one-year deal, cornerback James Bradberry to a three-year deal, running back Dion Lewis to complement Saquon Barkley, and Colt McCoy to back up Daniel Jones under center.
New York Jets
The Jets signed linebacker Patrick Onwuasor on Monday. He started six games last season for the Ravens.
In a heartwarming story, Jets General Manager Joe Douglas has been tipping $100 on every food order he makes during the quarantine.
New York Yankees
Major League Baseball has reportedly been floating around the idea of playing an 100-game season starting on July 4th. They are also exploring the possibility of playing more doubleheaders and at neutral sites.
The delay to start the season will also help the Yankees recover. Sluggers Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge now have more time to get healthy, as does starting pitcher James Paxton.
New York Mets
The Mets may welcome a cancelled season after the news that ace Noah Syndergaard would need Tommy John Surgery. There are now rumors floating around that the Mets may reunite with Matt Harvey to help out their rotation.
New York Knicks
The NBA is also discussing other playoff options, and the Knicks are surely welcome to that. They are moreso focusing on the offseason, particularly the draft and possibly trading for a disgruntled young player. Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen is reportedly unhappy in Chicago and the Knicks could be a landing spot for the young big man.
Off the court, Knicks owner James Dolan was revealed to have tested positive for Coronavirus last week.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets were hanging onto a playoff spot before the pause but are more focused on next season than this one. With Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant both healthy in the fall, they could do some damage.
Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai recently donated 2.6 millions masks, 170,000 goggles, and 2,000 ventilators to New York hospitals.
